    Prof Mangaldas Patel, aged 69, a former speaker of Gujarat assembly and one of the senior-most MLAs in the state, passed away after a prolonged illness at Gandhinagar civil hospital on Tuesday morning.

    Prof Mangaldas Patel, aged 69, a former speaker of Gujarat assembly and one of the senior-most MLAs in the state, passed away after a prolonged illness at Gandhinagar civil hospital on Tuesday morning.

    Ministers and politicians rushed to the hospital and later to Patel's residence to pay their respects to him. Chief minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to the former speaker at his residence.

    About Prof Mangaldas Patel


    He was born in Parbatpura village near Mansa on September 7 in 1942, Patel was the sitting MLA from the Mansa constituency in Gandhinagar. Patel held the office of Speaker of Gujarat legislative assembly from 2002 to 2007. He had also served as the acting speaker after the death of Speaker Ashok Bhatt in September last year.

    Prof Mangaldas's Contributions


    Prof Patel emerged as a leader during the co-operative movement. He was an active member of the erstwhile Jan Sangh, and had served in various capacities. He was elected to the state assembly for the first time in 1998. This was his third term as MLA.

    Modi praised Patel's contribution to the citizens' lives. Modi also said that Gujarat had lost a hard working servant of Panchayati Raj while BJP had lost a sincere worker with Patel's demise.
